Sam Hensley: Music
Yahweh, Our Love
(Sam Hensley)

In the fall of 2007, the National Cathedral in Washington held a Concert for Peace, with music and preaching together in the context of bringing people of different faiths and beliefs together to strive for understanding. The line-up included David Crosby, Graham Nash, Keb Mo' and others, but the main musician who stood out to me that night was Krishna Das. Krishna Das comes from the Hare Krishna tradition, which uses a style of musical chant called Kirtan. The music is call and response, and uses instruments like the portable Harmonium, tabla drums, djembes, and finger cymbals to create very meditation, yet soul-moving music. It opened up an entire new musical idea to me, and ever since the concert, I have been striving to write some music that borrows from the Kirtan tradition, going so far as to even buy a portable harmonium. Yahweh, Our Love is my first attempt, and hopefully is one of many to come.
Yahweh our love, Yahweh our love
Yahweh our love, our love is You
Yahweh, our hope…
Yahweh, our strength…
Yahweh, our peace…
Yahweh, our light…
Yahweh, our love…
