Sam Hensley: Music
Jesus my friend

In 2003, I was the music coordinator for the Junior Young People's Conference at Kanuga conference center. That year, the theme of the conference was "Roll Back the Stone," with the idea of exploring the Stations of the Resurrection, where Jesus appears to the women on the road, to Thomas, etc. But to begin the week, we started with the burial of Jesus in the tomb. A fun way to begin, right? I wrote this song to sing as we "buried" Jesus in the makeshift tomb we had created. I have since sung this song on Maundy Thursday, and find that it works very well in that setting, and really, that is the ONLY day of the church calendar when it works. So it gets its shot once a year. Hey, better than never.
Jesus my friend, Jesus my friend
Can this really be the end, of you?
Hung you on high, hung you on high
Scorned, mocked, and left you there to die, alone
Wrapped in a cloth, wrapped in a cloth
Does this mean our hope is lost, tonight?
Laid in a tomb, laid in a tomb
Please don’t say you’ve gone so soon, from here
