Sam Hensley: Diddlybows

Diddlybows

For my 30th birthday, Robert Payne and Sandy Hurt gave me an instrument called a diddley bow. The diddley bow is a string instrument of African origin made popular in America, probably developed from instruments found on the Ghana coast of west Africa. After doing several recordings with the diddley bow, in November of 2010, I decided to build several for a local craft fair in Roanoke. I built them in a guitar style, with a neck attached to a cigar box(there is a local cigar place in Roanoke that has a great selection of boxes,) and one string attached from the tail piece to a tuning machine. My sister-in-law, Sarah White, found flat bottom test tubes that work great as slides, which is used to change the pitch. The diddley bows sold great, and even after the sale, they continue to be in demand. So I am now selling to the general public. Each diddlybow is handmade, and comes with a slide and pick for instant music making. Please check out my photo page to see pictures, and listen to some samples on the music page.
